You can use the DBA Planning Calendar to schedule actions (for example, data backups, log backups, updates of SQL Optimizer statistics, and database structure checks). These are then performed at the specified time.
Open the DBA Planning Calendar (Setting Up and Using the DBA Planning Calendar).
You can add new actions by:
a. Double-clicking a calendar cell.
b. Positioning the cursor on a calendar cell and selecting Add.
c. Using Drag & Drop to drag an action from the Action Pad to a calendar cell.
d. Choosing Select Pattern to select an action pattern.
Note
You can also Drag & Drop actions inside the calendar. To copy an action, press the CTRL button while using Drag & Drop.
You come to a dialog box with an Action Description and other possible entries on the tabs Action Parameters and Repeat.
Action Description: If you have selected option a or b, you can choose the action you want to schedule from the Action field. If you have chosen option c the description of the action is copied from the Action Pad. In the Planned Start field, you can enter the date and time for the action to start.
Task Area | Entry in the Action Pad | Short Name |
---|---|---|
Data and log backups | Complete data backup Incremental data backup Activate Automatic Log Backups Deactivate automatic log backups Log backup Archive log backup files | DataBackup IncrBackup AutoLogOn AuotLogOff LogBackup ArchivFiles |
Determining statistics for the SQL Optimizer | Select tables for update statistics Update statistics for selected tables Update all optimizer statistics | PrepUpdStat UpdStats UpdAllStats |
Database structure checks | Check the database structure Check the database structure (tables only) | CheckData CheckTables |
Determining table size and growth | Update table statistics | CollTabSize |
Determining class container sizes (liveCache only) | Update class container statistics | CollClaccCo |
Checking backups | Check complete data backup Check incremental data backup Check log backup | CDataBackup CIncrBackup ClogBackup |
Executing DBM commands | Execute DBM Command | DBMExecute |
If you have selected option d, proceed as described in Action Patterns.
Action Parameters: The parameters for the required action are displayed in Action Parameters. These vary, depending on the action. On the Action Parameters tab page, enter or change the basic parameters for the action.
Repeat: Select the tab page Repeat and enter a repeat pattern.
Parameter |
Description |
---|---|
Recurrence Pattern |
Interval for the action in weeks, days or hours Depending on the selected recurrence pattern, you need to specify the pattern in more detail, that is the days of the week for weeks and the hours of the day for a daily period. The action is repeated at the interval you enter. If you select Once only, the action is executed only once. |
Recurrence Range |
Range of time where the action recurs, that is for a specific time interval or for a limited number of occurrences |
Caution
The system warns you if there is a conflict with an existing action. This does not stop you from adding the new action, however. You must decide for yourself if the collision of the actions will affect performance or database access. The underlying collision check does not search for actions with the same start times, it searches for actions within a time period of about 30 minutes.
Follow the planning concept you chose.
To schedule the action, select Continue.
Editing Previously Planned Actions
To change an entry in an action already scheduled (start, repeat pattern, action parameters), proceed as described in Changing or Deleting an Action.
If you want to execute an action immediately, regardless of its scheduling, proceed as described in Starting an Action Immediately.
The DBA Planning Calendar's schedule is updated. The system checks for conflicts with previously scheduled activities.
If conflicts are found, the system displays them and does not schedule the action. If no conflicts are found, the system includes the action in the DBA Planning Calendar and schedules a background job (or executes the action).
You should check, at regular intervals, that the actions scheduled are running correctly. You can display the status of each action using the DBA Planning Calendar (Displaying Actions). The Calendar displays unsuccessful actions in a different color.
