To make sure that your database operates efficiently and in line with security requirements, you need to execute certain database management tasks, some of which need to be repeated regularly. You can plan these using the DBA Planning Calendar: DBA Cockpit, DBA Planning Calendar, or Database Assistant, or liveCache Assistant, DBA Planning Calendar.
The first time you start your system, the DBA Planning Calendar is empty. You can use it to schedule new actions (for example, data backups, log backups, updates of SQL Optimizer statistics and database structure checks). These are then performed at the specified time.
You can set up the DBA Planning Calendar by selecting a planning pattern or choosing a predefined action from the Action Pad. If you add a new action, this is defaulted as a once-only execution.
You can schedule, change or delete actions as required. Most of the actions that can be planned with the DBA Planning Calendar should be scheduled as periodic actions. You must check the calendar daily to be sure that scheduled actions have been carried out correctly.
At present, the following actions are available in the DBA Planning Calendar in the Action Pad:
Task Area | Entry in the Action Pad | Short Name |
---|---|---|
Data and log backups | Complete data backup Incremental data backup Activate Automatic Log Backups Deactivate automatic log backups Log backup Archive log backup files | DataBackup IncrBackup AutoLogOn AuotLogOff LogBackup ArchivFiles |
Determining statistics for the SQL Optimizer | Select tables for update statistics Update statistics for selected tables Update all optimizer statistics | PrepUpdStat UpdStats UpdAllStats |
Database structure checks | Check the database structure Check the database structure (tables only) | CheckData CheckTables |
Determining table size and growth | Update table statistics | CollTabSize |
Determining class container sizes (liveCache only) | Update class container statistics | CollClaccCo |
Checking backups | Check complete data backup Check incremental data backup Check log backup | CDataBackup CIncrBackup ClogBackup |
Executing DBM commands | Execute DBM Command | DBMExecute |
Think about a suitable planning concept for the most important task areas. Before a scheduled backup action is due to start, make sure that the data carriers have been inserted and are ready to run.
Also create any necessary backup templates.

Schedule any further actions required, such as Checking Backups or Updating Table Statistics.
Edit the schedule to make any required changes to activities or start times.

Check the DBA Planning Calendar daily to see whether your scheduled activities have been performed correctly. In the DBA Planning Calendar, check whether the backup actions that are scheduled for the next few days can be performed correctly.

If any action did not run successfully, analyze the problem and repeat the action if necessary.

Note
It is not possible to execute all the tasks necessary for managing the database from the DBA Planning Calendar. Information about actions you need to execute if the SAP system is not available can be found in the documentation Database Administration.
