Purpose

This tutorial describes selected tasks in the administration of database instances using the Structure linkDatabase Manager CLI in the Microsoft Windows operating system.

All examples are based on the demo database, which was designed and configured for practice and testing purposes. Do not use the demo database instance in a production system.

Implementation Considerations

The Database Manager CLI documentation describes the DBM options, DBM commands and their prerequisites individually. By contrast, the focus of this tutorial is the precise sequence of DBM commands you need to execute in order to, for example, create a database instance, change a database parameter or execute a backup.

The tutorial is a collection of examples for typical administration tasks.

The contents of the examples are structured as follows:

Use

General overview of the steps necessary to perform the action

Scenario

Hypothetical situation for the example

Procedure

Precise input and output texts,
with comments as necessary

Result

Brief summary of the state of the database instance following the executed action, with notes on what further actions could be now executed

For detailed information about the prerequisites for executing individual DBM commands, see the command descriptions in the Database Manager CLI documentation. The Structure linkoverview of all commands makes it easy to find the DBM commands you seek.

For further information about the database system, see the documentation Structure linkConcepts of the Database System and the Structure linkGlossary.

Features

This documentation does not claim to be exhaustive. It is, however, continuously expanded to address more of the questions and problems that are brought to our attention, in particular through the MaxDB mailing list. If you have a question about an administration task not described here, you can search the mailing list archive at http://lists.mysql.com/maxdb for relevant information.

Restrictions

This documentation was not conceived to be the sole guide for a database administrator. To use this tutorial, you need to be familiar with the database system, its components and in particular with the Database Manager CLI documentation.
